Each time a significant honors show approaches, one notices a clamor to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
- Only a few logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
