The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
